TEMPORARY CAREGIVER VISA
Families can hire a foreign caregiver to provide care, in a private residence, to children, seniors or persons with certified medical needs, when Canadians and permanent residents are not available.
Under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), families can hire foreign caregivers. However, the caregivers must:
- provide care on a full-time basis (minimum 30 hours per week)
- work in the private household where the care is being provided
- meet the requirements set Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)/Service Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
Apply for a new work permit
In most cases, you can apply for a work permit temporarily as a caregiver through the TFWP if one of these applies to you:
- You’re in Canada and eligible to apply for a work permit from inside Canada.
- You’re outside Canada and your employer applied for an LMIA before June 18, 2019.
- You’ll be working in Quebec.
You can’t apply for a new work permit (that needs an LMIA) if:
Your employer already applied for an LMIA on or after June 18, 2019, and
- you’re applying for a work permit from outside Canada through the TFWP and
- you plan to work in a province or territory other than Quebec
You've already applied for a work permit at a port of entry on or after April 22, 2022.
You’re in Canada as a visitor and apply for your first work permit on or after April 22, 2022.
Apply to extend your work permit
If you’re currently working in Canada as a caregiver, you may be eligible to extend your work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP).
Your employer will need to get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) first.
How to apply
Your employer will need to get a positive LMIA first. Once they have a positive LMIA, you can apply for a work permit.
In addition to a positive LMIA, you must have the following:
A Contract from the Future Employer, signed by the employee and the employer
Successful Completion of the Equivalent of a Canadian Secondary School Education
Work Experience as a Caregiver or in a Related Field or Occupation
You are required to have at least six months of training or at least one year of full-time paid work experience as a caregiver or in a related field or occupation. Six months of your work experience must be continuous employment with one employer. This experience must also have been within the three years before the day on which the caregiver makes an application for the work permit as a caregiver.
Good Knowledge of English or French
